Calling all dancing queens! The jukebox musical is making its way to the Buell Theatre in Denver, Colorado, for a very limited period of time. For a total of 8 shows from October 31 to November 5, you get the chance to witness the marvelous production everyone has been raving about! If you’ve been living under a rock since its peak popularity in the late 2000s and have yet to hop on the Mama Mia train, now is your time to shine.
Benny Andersson & Björn Ulvaeus’ Mamma Mia! was written by the British playwright Catherine Johnson and based on songs by the Swedish group ABBA. Since its premiere in 1999, the musical production has sold over 65 million tickets and has grossed $4 billion worldwide. Mama Mia! is a story you simply cannot go wrong with. Its catchy tunes and energetic dance numbers became a worldwide phenomenon that they turned the musical into several movies even decades after the musical production’s premiere.
“ABBA-absolutely fabulous!” – Bristol Post
Some of the catchiest hits in the musical include “Super Trouper,” “Lay All Your Love on Me,” “Dancing Queen,” “Knowing Me, Knowing You,” “Take a Chance on Me,” “Thank You for the Music,” “Money, Money, Money,” “The Winner Takes It All,” “Voulez-Vous,” “SOS” and “Mamma Mia.” If these titles aren’t ringing any bells, don’t worry. They will feel everso familiar once you hear them during the performance, and will have you out of your seats – singing and dancing along the entire time!
“fully embraces the absurdity of a musical based on ABBA songs and just goes for the excitement and energy of that idea!” – Playbill’s Margaret Hall
For nearly 25 years, Mama Mia’s story, characters, and awesome music have captured the hearts of people from all over the world. The story-telling magic of ABBA’s songs makes this one of the sunniest musicals of all time. Although the musical is super well-known for ABBA’s catchy tunes, the story is not about ABBA or any of their songs. It’s a classic tale of a daughter, a mother, and three potential dads. Sounds exciting, right?
The story follows Donna and Sophie, a mother and daughter who reside on a Greek island, as they get ready for Sophie’s wedding. Due in great part to Donna’s lack of knowledge regarding Sophie’s father, Sophie has grown up without ever meeting him. 21 years previously, Donna had three separate relationships, and any of the men may have been Sophie’s father. In an effort to learn the real identity of her father, Sophie discreetly invites these three men to her wedding after learning their identities from her mother’s journal. Uncomfortable circumstances follow.
One can only imagine how hilariously awkward yet charmingly relatable Mama Mia can get. There’s a reason why people keep coming back for Mama Mia, and it’s mainly because the unique storyline follows funny and lovable characters in an uncommon situation. Plus, the production’s musical numbers are absolutely fantastic.
“The most fun I’ve had in a theatre in years!” – Toronto Star, Canada
“stonkingly, wonderfully, unbelievably good as the first time I saw it.” – The Guardian
“ABBA’s Mamma Mia! inspires new generations of fans” – Youngpost’s Melanie Leung
The Guardian wrote a positive review of the musical production. They said, “Who could disagree that, ten years on, the Abba musical extravaganza Mamma Mia! is still unbelievably good? It is completely uncynical and consistently compelling – it’s the perfect show for someone who says they don’t like theatre or who “doesn’t do musicals”. I’ve seen the show a few times in various locations and, with the exception of last night and the first night in 1999, have paid top dollar for the privilege – a real testimony to its attractions for someone used to seeing shows for free.”
Now, dancing queens, we hope you’re ready because now you can dance, you can jive, having the time of your life! After seeing the feel-good musical production, you’ll certainly leave with a spring in your step. Whether it’s from singing along to your favorite ABBA songs, watching the brilliant cast put on an entertaining but occasionally poignant performance, or getting up and dancing during the encore when Donna and the Dynamos make a surprise appearance.
