The Book Of Mormon

Originating from Broadway, it’s time for Colorado to fall in love with theatre again as the musical comedy Book of Mormon will be coming to in Denver at The Buell Theatre on Wednesday 7th May 2025.

The witty and sometimes humorously offensive musical Book of Mormon follows the story of two Mormon Elders in training to become missionaries – Kevin Price and Arnold Cunningham, who are tasked with a mission to a remote village in Uganda to convert its residents. The play deliberately satirizes religion in general through the eyes of the pair, as Cunningham comes up with fact mixed with fiction to teach religion to the locals.

The Book of Mormon was created by Robert Lopez, Trey Parker, and Matt Stone, the same creators of the cartoon TV series South Park and the Broadway play Avenue Q.

Launching in 2011, The Book of Mormon has undoubtedly been one of the most thriving Broadway musicals since its opening. Created by Trey Parker, Matt Stone, and Robert Lopez, the musical is based on the Latter-day Saints (LDS) founder and prophet Joseph Smith complete with his Book of Mormon. The show was intended to debut off Broadway at the New York Theatre workshop after its 2008 staged reading, though this turned out to be a blessing in disguise as its actual debut in 2011 moved to a more central location at the Eugene O’Neill Theatre.

In just a year, the Broadway play was already approved for a U.S. national tour that lasted four years, including a run in Salt Lake City, Utah! The show also proceeded to be performed in several locations, with a Chicago production produced in 2012, a West End production in 2013, and Australian and Swedish productions both staged in 2017.

The storytelling and satire of this musical were key components to this success. It tells the story of Elder Kevin Price and Elder Arnold Cunningham, two Mormon missionaries who embark on a mission to spread their religion in a remote village in Uganda. It is there that they contend with completing their mission, as well as their different methods in preaching their faith, given that Cunningham chooses to teach the villagers by adding fictional parts from science fiction and fantasy stories into his sermons, while Price is bent on teaching the villagers in the usual, orthodox manner. The way the musical is shared with the audience is performed in quite an unorthodox manner as well, usually making fun of religion in its script and also injecting comic entertainment in both of its acts, and of course, let's not forget the showtunes!

For its current production, the Book of Mormon will be in Denver in May at the magnificent theatre venue of The Buell Theatre, which holds an unbelievable stage, sound system and acoustics, and unrivaled facilities that is fit for this critically-acclaimed musical.
