Founded on the original 2001 film directed, created, and penned by Baz Luhrmann, Moulin Rouge! The Musical is a live adaptation of the same romantic tale focused on Christian, an American writer, and Satine, the Moulin Rouge nightclub entertainer. The stage adaptation, which started at the Al Hirschfeld Theatre in 2019, takes a modern approach by broadening on the the 2001 film, especially with scoring, with over 70 numbers prepared by 161 writers and composers reaching the first showing on the Broadway stage.

In 2019, debuting at the Al Hirschfeld theatre, the 2001 movie Moulin Rouge was modified into the well-loved musical adaptation in Broadway. Originally created by Baz Luhrmann, it was brought to the stage by award-winning cast members like Aaron Tveit and Karen Olivo, who were the original cast members of Christian and Satine respectively, and the creatives including director Alex Timbers and music arrangements and medleys by Justine Levine, behind the curtain.
Moulin Rouge! The Musical is a show filled with young passion, love, and loss that shows us all four Bohemian values of truth, beauty, freedom, and love. At the end of the 1800s and at the peak of Bohemianism, during the time period of La Belle Époque, Christian, an American writer and composer, tries to find his big career break. He hopes to start a chance to succeed as a writer and travels to Montmartre, Paris, where he meets two local friends, Lautrec and Santiago, who influence him to create a musical that they can flaunt. It is in the underworld of Moulin Rouge where he meets Satine, the entertainer of the the infamous nightclub that catches his eye and heart. Their budding relationship however meets an almost insurmountable obstacle in the person of the rich and powerful Duke of Monroth, who is promised Satine by the nightclub’s promoter Harold Zidler, in agreement for a considerable financial trade-off to keep Moulin Rouge afloat and pay off the nightclub's debts. So starts Christian and Satine’s tale of love and loss on the live stage.
Essentially a love affair that remains a sure favorite even now, Moulin Rouge is also a combination of both old and new music, incorporating arrangements not just from the 2001 film, but also performance mash-ups and medleys from popular songs that were injected into the creative direction of the musical.
