Set side by side with the original known story of the Shakespearean play which was presented live on stage roughly forty decades prior, viewers have noted the stark changes which were made to ‘& Juliet’, a significantly more modern production based on the same female lead. Shakespeare’s original story centers around the tragic story that occurs because of rash decision-making and the uncontrolled passion of two lovers, which results in the deaths of both Romeo and Juliet. On the other hand, ‘& Juliet’ looks beyond the said tragic ending and instead pursues a more positive outlook by concentrating on the endless possibilities of life, even after such agonizing experiences.
This messaging is evident in the new musicall’s cast of characters, Juliet, and her circle of friends, who travel to Paris to discover their identities not just as individuals, but as mighty women. ‘& Juliet’ is a good feminist view through the eyes of Shakespeare’s wife, Anne Hathaway, who takes the reigns of her husband’s narrative and alters the ending of his famous classic. She gives both old characters from the original story a second opportunity to shine, while welcoming new and equally empowered women to the cast. Going off-script from Romeo & Juliet, the production is able to incorporate popular culture, specifically songs from recent years, that highlight the growing awareness and self-discovery of each of the leading characters throughout the musical. Even the dresses worn by the show’s characters give a nod to Romeo & Juliet, while presenting the contrast between the new musical and the previous classic by using Elizabethan fashion and iconography with today’s attire styles. Each aspect of the show was carefully thought-out to emphasize empowerment and "being able to write your own story".
