Gutenberg! The Musical

Broadway is coming to Denver, and it’s doing so in a big way! One of the biggest hits of the 2024 season in the Big Apple is going to be making the rounds in theaters across the country in the spring of 2025. Gutenberg! The Musical will stop by the Buell Theatre in Denver, Colorado, on Friday, April 4th, 2025. This original story by Scott Brown and Anthony King has been showcased abroad and off Broadway since the early 2000s. Even getting adaptations into different languages, with a version of the show recently opening in Madrid.

It wasn’t until 2023 that it officially debuted on Broadway. Currently, it calls the James Earl Jones Theater its base of operations in NYC. It’s a high-energy endeavor with two of the best theater actors of this generation. The combination makes for a perfect night out to the Buell Theater on Friday, April 4th, 2025. Josh Gad and Andrew Rannells, two of the original cast members from the hit musical The Book of Mormon, were cast as Bud Davenport and Doug Simon, respectively. These are the two guys that are going to be running the show for the entire time. If you’re wondering how much of the play is historically accurate, that would be about a .01%. The only thing historically accurate about the play is the name Gutenberg! It’s actually a show about two guys who are trying to pitch a play to producers. In one of the promos, Andrew Rannells mentions that the story is more of a love letter to Broadway itself. That may be one of the best ways to describe this story.

What you get are two guys who are going back and forth trying to actually play multiple characters within the play that they’re trying to pitch. All sorts of craziness ensues, and of course, you can expect them to burst out into song every once in a while. It is a musical, after all! This is an incredibly difficult play to act out. The leads have to be amazing actors in their own right. As mentioned, they’re playing characters who are in themselves playing other characters pitching a play that isn’t the one they’re acting. Again, as Rannells put it, Gutenberg is a love letter to theater and Broadway itself. For this show in Denver, there might be a special guest on the final scene. That’s a bit that they’ve been following for most of their shows in NYC. Keep an eye out for that!

This show is slated to start at 7:30 pm. Most of the Buell Theater will be open on this Friday night in early April. You’ll typically want to have seats with an open view of the stage. Keep that in mind when you go to find your spot for this event. The Buell Theater gets a ton of these Broadway shows on tour on a regular basis. No offense to Wicked, though, but if you’re a theater buff, you’ve probably seen that show a few times already.
