Synopsis

A devilishly delightful musical comedy that embraces the wackiness in every family, THE ADDAMS FAMILY features an original tale and it’s every father’s nightmare. The story follows Wednesday Addams who is the ultimate princess of darkness. She has grown up and fallen in love with a kind, smart young man from a respectable family.

A man her family has never met. And if that wasn’t upsetting enough, she entrusts her father, Gomez Addams, and begs him not to tell her mom, Morticia Addams. Now, Gomez (played by Jesse Sharp) must do something he’s never done before – put the lid on a secret from his beloved wife, Morticia (played by KeLeen Snowgren). Everything will change for the entire family on the doomful night they host a dinner party for Wednesday’s “normal” boyfriend and his parents. The story features all the usual clan, including Uncle Fester, Lurch, and Pugsley Addams.

History and Awards

The Addams Family is a fictional family cultivated by the notorious cartoonist Charles Addams. They originally featured in a series of 150 standalone single-panel comics, with about half originally published in The New Yorker from 1938 until their creator’s death in 1988. The cartoons have since been adapted to television, movies, video games, comic books, musicals, as well as merchandise.

The live-action television series landed on the 18th September 1964, and ran for two applauded seasons. The show inspired a 1977 telefilm called Halloween with the New Addams Family and cameos from the cast in a number of other shows like Scooby Doo.

The Addams Family was revived in the nineties with a movie franchise consisting of 1991’s The Addams Family and 1993’s Addams Family Values. Both movies snagged nominations for Academy Awards, BAFTA Awards, and Hugo Awards. For her role as Morticia Addams, Anjelica Huston received two nominations for the Golden Globe Award for Best Actress, and Raul Julia (as Gomez Addams), Christina Ricci (as Wednesday Addams), Christopher Lloyd (as Uncle Fester), and Joan Cusack (as Uncle Fester’s wife, Debbie Jellinsky, in the sequel) secured several Saturn Award and American Comedy Award nominations for their roles.

The Addams Family made its way to the stage with great critical success. The musical comedy opened on Broadway in April 2010 and won a number of awards and nominations. At the Drama Desk Awards, the production won Outstanding Set Design and was nominated for Outstanding Musical, Outstanding Actor in a Musical, Outstanding Featured Actor in a Musical, Outstanding Featured Actress in a Musical, Outstanding Lyrics, and Outstanding Music. At the Outer Critics Circle Awards, the show won Outstanding Set Design. At the Drama League Awards, it won Distinguished Achievement in Musical Theatre for Nathan Lane, as well as receiving multiple nominations at the Tony Awards.

Reviews

“Both the music and the dialogue are wickedly witty and delectably dark, sticking true to the roots of the family we all know and love. The attention to detail was remarkable, from every line to movement, the musical flowed perfectly and there was never a dull moment. From the moment I heard those all familiar clicks, I knew instantly that I was in for a good time, the sense of nostalgia this musical gave took me back to when I first discovered the films that I hold so dear, and that feeling was irreplaceable. Full disclosure, it was the best of nights and I would recommend this musical to anyone.” – Red Brick
