Let's address the elephant in the room! This is a story line that you probably know already. That's potentially the main reason why you're heading to the The Buell Theatre. What makes it worthwhile to watch a play when know exactly what's going to happen? It's a rhetorical question because the answer is you're interested in seeing how they handle the plot! One of the best elements about Back To The Future - Theatrical Production is that it does stay very true to the original story. At the same time, in every version of this play on Broadway on the West End or in the US Tour, the performers were given free rein to put their style on the characters. While some of the dialogue was taken word for word from the movie, you won't see Roger Bart, who's played Doc Brown on Broadway and The West End, try to copy Christopher Lloyd. The same thing goes for Marty McFly and Michael J. Fox.
You could say that's a given because this is a musical, and the performers who are giving life to these characters in the theater have to sing. While there's some of that, it's still safe to say that one of the keys to the success of the story as a musical is that it has taken up a life of its own. That's something that anyone in the audience is going to be thankful for because what's going to be happening on stage isn't just a copy of the film. This phenomenon is similar to the way that a musical like The Lion King has been able to distance itself from the animated film. In this case, the soundtrack is truly maximized in the musical in a way that the movie will always fall short of.
