Romanticizing the life of the central female character of Shakespeare's iconic tragedy, ‘& Juliet’ changes the original's ending wherein Juliet chooses not to kill herself after she loses the love of her life and Juliet's profound learning of what life has to offer during the time of her journey to Paris, France. Along the way, she encounters both old friends and brand new friends who were made for more modern audiences. Building on the original with contemporary themes, the musical revitalizes the classic and finds a way to entertain even young viewers.

Moving away from the previous plot of the Shakespearean play which debuted on stage roughly four hundred years earlier, viewers have distinguished the considerable alterations that were implemented to ‘& Juliet’, a significantly newer production based on the same lead character. Shakespeare’s original narrative revolves around the tragedy that occurs because of rash decision-making and the insatiable passion of two lovers, which results in the poisoning of both Romeo and Juliet. On the other hand, ‘& Juliet’ looks beyond the said tragic events and instead pursues a more positive outlook by concentrating on the endless possibilities of life, even after such tragic experiences.
This messaging is evident in the new showl’s cast of characters, Juliet, and her circle of friends, who journey to Paris to embrace their identities not just as individuals, but as mighty women. ‘& Juliet’ is a good feminist view through the eyes of Shakespeare’s wife, Anne Hathaway, who takes the reigns of her husband’s narrative and alters the ending of his popular classic. She gives both old characters from the original story a second opportunity to shine, while bringing in new and equally strong women to the story. Going off-script from Romeo & Juliet, the musical is able to incorporate contemporary culture, specifically songs from recent generations, that symbolize the growing awareness and self-discovery of each of the women throughout the musical. Even the fashion worn by the play’s ladies give a nod to Romeo & Juliet, while highlighting the contrast between the ongoing musical and the previous classic by using Elizabethan dresses and iconography with today’s attire styles. Each aspect of the musical was carefully thought-out to promote empowerment and "being able to write your own story".
