Jesus Christ Superstar, which began as a concept album in 1970, was ALW’s first to premiere on Broadway before moving on to London in 1971. The show is best known for its rock anthems, including “Heaven on Their Minds,” “Everything’s Alright,” “I Don’t Know How to Love Him,” “Gethsemane,” and “Superstar.”
It’s a bombastic rock opera that delves into the Gospels. This electrifying production paints a vivid picture of the last week of Jesus’ life, with a significant focus on his complex relationship with Judas Iscariot. What sets this show apart is its infusion of modern sensibilities and a poignant exploration of contemporary political and social themes. In this rendition, Jesus is portrayed as undeniably human, grappling with the inevitability of his impending death.
This revival was originally staged by London’s Regent’s Park Open Air Theatre and directed by acclaimed director Timothy Sheader (Crazy for You, Into the Woods) and cutting-edge choreographer Drew McOnie (King Kong, Strictly Ballroom). Upon its debut, it went on to win the 2017 Olivier Award for Best Musical Revival. It also succeeded in garnering unprecedented reviews and accolades. This performance appeals to both theatergoers and concert music aficionados. It pays homage to the landmark 1971 Billboard Album of the Year while creating a modern, dramatic setting that is uniquely new and exciting.

This energetic 50th Anniversary Tour is an adrenaline-filled rock concert that celebrates the legendary music and lyrics the way Sir Andrew and Tim Rice always intended. If you are a fan of the music itself, you will love this show.”
Meanwhile, The Guardian raved about the revival in the same way.
